My recent work explores the merging of several mediums such as oil paint, collage, and mosaic tiles. Working in square compositions, my paintings are balanced with a geometric border that encases organic shapes, or “webs”. These web shapes often surround a collaged image that peeks between the holes of the pattern. I collage my images onto each piece using a matte medium transfer method, this allows me to preserve the image as its pigment is sealed onto the surface. I collect my collage materials by digging through old magazines and books I find in thrift stores, flea malls, and secondhand shops. I repurpose these found images into my work based on their color, pattern or subject matter, then merge them with other dimensional mediums such as mosaic tiles or paint. Furthermore, applying the oil paint in an impasto style, the paint itself serves a purpose as a web of colored texture, unlike the traditional application of paint to create an image. The repetitive process used in this body of work is important to me, as it allows the freedom to make for the sake of making.
